We know you take pride in your appearance, and we want you to look and feel your best. At Aesthetic Surgical Images, our board-certified plastic surgeons are here to help. Many women find that very large breasts may seem disproportionate to the rest of the body, and may even cause physical pain. Breast reduction surgery is a procedure that can help alleviate neck, back and shoulder pain.
Under what circumstances is breast reduction surgery appropriate?
Breast reduction surgery can give you a better overall appearance, and improved self-esteem. Beyond cosmetic improvement, breast reduction surgery is often performed to relieve pain. Women with excessively large breasts may suffer from frequent headaches, back and shoulder pain, and even breathing problems. Breast reduction surgery can provide welcome relief in such cases, and can help women lead a more active lifestyle.
What is breast reduction surgery?
During the procedure, your surgeon will make incisions around the areola, vertically from the areola to the fold of the breast and along the fold of the breast, much like an anchor shape. Excess skin, fat and tissue are removed. The breast is also lifted and tightened. The nipple-areolar complex is also reduced and elevated. Scars from the procedure typically fade over time. This procedure can be done as an outpatient at Aesthetic Surgical Image’s Surgical Suite, but may also be performed at a nearby hospital and is usually covered by insurance.
Will my insurance pay for it?
Breast reduction is frequently covered by insurance plans. It is likely that your insurance company will have some requirements, such as a letter from the surgeon, a referral from your general practitioner, photos or other documentation. Our office will submit your information through to your insurance company and follow it through. This process typically takes 6-8 weeks.
Your initial consultation at Aesthetic Surgical Images
Your board-certified plastic surgeon will discuss all of your options. You can count on us taking the time to explain everything you need to know, including the risks, recovery time, and various options that are available to you. During your initial consultation, you can discuss with your doctor what results you would like—and you can make a plan with your surgeon that includes details on the size and shape you would like your breasts to be.
What can I expect after my breast reduction surgery?
At your initial consultation your surgeon will discuss post-operative care and expectations with you. There may be some pain and discomfort for a few days. It can be managed with pain medication. Stitches will be removed 1-2 weeks after your surgery and you will wear a special support bra for several weeks. Most breast reduction patients can resume normal activities in 6 weeks.
