Where Are Implants Placed?
With small exceptions, the most commonly placed position of the implant is beneath the pectoralis major muscle. Over the years, the subpectoral placement has improved the aesthetic results, as well as minimized some of the potential risks encountered with a submammary placement. Occasionally, a submammary placement may be appropriate for a small, select group of patients. Lastly, there is a possibility of a “bi-planar” placement, which is actually a hybrid position. The superior aspect of the implant is covered by the breast. Recommendations for the proper placement of the implant will depend on the findings during the physical exam.
What Type of Implants Are Best?
There are two types of breast augmentation implants available- silicone gel and saline. Both implants have been approved by the FDA for breast augmentation procedures. Each implant has its own characteristics and risks, which will be discussed during the time of the consultation. Today, over 60 percent of women prefer the gel implants in contrast to the saline option.
Will the Incision Be Visible?

Incisions for the procedure are classically located in the natural crease of the breast inferiorly, around the areola, and through the axilla(armpit). Most of our patients have either one of the first two choices. The decision of which incision is utilized depends on the patients request and the physical examination.
During a consultation, every patient will have a thorough discussion with a surgeon of Aesthetic Surgical Images regarding each of these three variables. The patients input, as well as the physician’s recommendation, will be considered before making a final decision.
